Julius Maibaum, born in Marburg an der Lahn in 1985, studied visual communication at the Kassel Art University. He moved to Berlin while still a student and made his graduation film, ‘Die Filmemacher’ (The Filmmakers), in 2013. His debut feature film Lotte celebrated its world premiere at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival (in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section). The film was shown at numerous festivals, including the Montreal World Film Festival, and won several awards, including Best Film at the New Berlin Film Award. Filming of his second feature film, ‘Monolith’, began shortly before the coronavirus pandemic. It was shown at several festivals in 2023 and once again won the New Berlin Film Award for ‘Best Film’. Maibaum is currently living and working on several projects in Kassel and Hamburg. His current works include two children's films set in his hometown of Marburg.
